Africa has more than 10,000 confirmed cases

Since Africa confirmed its first COVID-19 case in February, the virus has spread rapidly to 52 out of 54 countries and the number of confirmed cases has risen to over 10,000 in a number of weeks.

The latest countries to register cases include São Tomé and Príncipe, South Sudan and Malawi – leaving only Lesotho and Comoros without confirmed COVID-19 cases.

While governments across the continent have implemented strict social distancing measures, the virus continues to spread and its progression is likely to put a huge strain on domestic health systems in the weeks to come.

Despite many countries adopting economic measures to ease the burden on businesses and individuals and global lenders supporting fragile economies with emergency funding, most forecasts predict that much of Africa is headed for a downturn.
